Mural ›Minho‹

Minho, as the northernmost province of Portugal lies on the border with Spain. One can discover history, traditions and outstanding gastronomy here. All of that besides an impressive landscape and the sea. The most well-known landmarks of this region are its evergreen landscapes and green wine (vinho verde) vineyards. Furthermore, the seaside regions are popular with surfers and the interior with hikers and nature lovers.

Following comprehensive planning and renovation of a former station house in Vila Praia do Ancora by Stefan Bullerkotte and Daniela Eksen / NoPink Studio, a work of art was to decorate the outdoor bathroom in the courtyard. I had the great honor of developing a motif for the ›Railworker's House‹.

The idea was to combine geographic and cultural aspects of the surrounding area on three sides. The large wall, which catches the eye as soon as one enters the courtyard with its green landscape is transformed around the corner into a convivial get-together. This section is complemented very fittingly when one looks from the kitchen door. The river ›Minho‹ runs through the entire scene and ends – in the shower area – with two surfers.

What would a project like this be without a few insights into the entire Making-Of process? Needless to say, we had a lot of fun, naturally stiff backs and a few unplanned obstacles to contend with during the realization of the mural: Only one side of the wall could be blasted with the projector for architectural reasons, which means that 2 sides had to be applied manually on location. The weather was so fickle. Rainy periods, during which we had to take a break, alternated with periods of extreme heat, during which the paint dried too quickly. The quality and application results of some shades were so poor that we had to change our plans on the spur of the moment and, in doing so, completely overturn the color concept. But at the end of the day, it wasn't just the homeowners who were completely satisfied.

The mural was created and sketched by mawidesign and painted together with Daniela Eksen.
